Musical findings Winter 2012

Hey friends and strangers.

A few months ago I found a few musicians that I thought I would share with you. The reason I am posting this in late March and not late last year is because I haven't found any new music since then because I have been too busy.

My personal fave is Youth Lagoon, who I posted a video of last year.

"Youth Lagoon is the stage name of the American musician Trevor Powers (from Boise, Idaho). His debut album The Year of Hibernation explores themes such as psychological dysphoria and mental distress, and is based around minimalism and hypnotic ambience. The Year of Hibernation was released on Fat Possum Records in 2011. Powers later described his writing process as “my mind communicating with me, not the other way around…it can take me to scary places but I’ve realized those bizarre thoughts I have don’t define me.”

His music is described as:

dream pop, Indie, lo-fi, glow-fi, chillwave

His albums Year of hibernation and cannons are out of this world. His most recent wonderous bughouse I am not quite sure if it compares.

Matthew Joel

He describes his music as:

ambient, elf-core, folk, instrumental, melodramatic, pop, post-rock, winter

The album I really enjoy which I linked y'all to is The Rocky Mountains Ep.

He describes the album:

This album is an attempt to capture the grandeur of the mountains, in song form. Growing up in British Columbia the Mountains have always been a big part of my life. There’s something about the shear rock faces, and tree clad valleys that feel like home.

These tracks don’t have a lot of words in them, perhaps and odd musical direction for me--those who know me understand that I usually spend my time strumming folk songs on an acoustic guitar. However, after being finished these tracks I feel that these they are as much apart of me as any other.

For these songs I took a lot of inspiration from the obvious, like The Album Leaf and Explosions in the Sky, but This Will Destroy You’s “Young Mountain” was perhaps the biggest influence. Every one needs to hear that album.

It is my hope that these tracks can be a nice accompaniment to any future cozy winter afternoons.

Two bicycles

Two bicycles is Jameson Dick's or "Teen daze" side project.

I prefer it to the more electronic sounding Teen daze.

He describes Two bicycles as"

folk, vancouver, ambient, dream pop, instrumental, post rock

His most recent record titled Ocean...
...tells the story of a night spent at sea. The beauty and hope that comes with the watching of the sun set, swimming in the moonlight and looking back at life back on land in fondness and happiness. But as the night falls, and the endless ocean reveals itself as the chaotic, exilic wilderness, the main character begins to feel isolated and on edge. The ocean can bring both optimism and fear, hope and loneliness.

The Parish of little Clifton
http://theparishoflittleclifton.bandcamp.com/album/portia

He describes his music as

"Seasonal Pop" music recorded and arranged in the heart of BC. Drawing from an endless supply of samples and lush synths, The Parish Of Little Clifton crafts a sound of his own. Influenced by the change of scenery, "The Parish" has been noted to genre-hop from acoustic to house, from ambient to trip-hop."

I gotta go get a degree. Enjoy the music.
